The F/A-18C model is an upgraded version featuring improved avionics, enhanced strike capabilities, and increased reliability in both air-to-air combat and ground attack missions. In 1988, Switzerland conducted a comparative evaluation between the F-16 and the F/A-18, ultimately selecting the latter as the new fighter for its air force. Deliveries took place from 1996 to 1999, with most of the aircraft assembled in Switzerland.

The F/A-18C Hornet’s armament consists of a suite of multifunctional systems ensuring effectiveness in any combat scenario. For air-to-air engagements, it carries AIM-9L Sidewinder infrared-guided missiles and AIM-7P Sparrow radar-guided missiles. For ground attack missions, the aircraft can carry unguided bombs such as the Mk.82, Mk.83, and Mk.84, as well as low-drag variants like the Mk.82 Snakeye and Mk.83 AIR. It can also be equipped with unguided rockets such as the Zuni Mk32 and Hydra-70. For precision strikes, the Hornet uses laser-guided bomb systems like the GBU-12, GBU-16, GBU-10, and EGBU-24. To engage armored targets, it can deploy AGM-65E and AGM-65G Maverick guided missiles. Additionally, the aircraft can be outfitted with external fuel tanks, a countermeasure dispensing system, and a targeting pod with thermal imaging equipment.
